The Living Bamboo team dug into a client project, transforming an inner city Brisbane garden into a tropical oasis. Beautiful Gracilis ‘Slender Weaver’ bamboo were plants installed, and topped with Rocky Point Pine Mulch ahead of a deck and pool going in.

We started off with measurements and a thorough inspection of soil and water supplies, before digging a few test holes dug with a petrol auger to ensure that there was sufficient drainage and the roots would not get water logged.

After clearing the beds and preparing soil, plants were installed, watered and then covered with mulch after a good soak of water.

Gracilis Bamboo, or 'slender weavers', has slender erect green culms that when exposed at base will reveal long green internodes that turn yellow when in contact with the sun. Positioned around this garden as a privacy screen, the rapid growth rate of these Gracilis bamboo plants will look spectacular. Gracilis, or Slender Weaver has dense evergreen foliage that can be left low to the ground or pruned away to show of its many culms. Gracilis is a non-invasive tight clumping bamboo plant that can easily grow in a narrow boxed garden bed.

About Gracilis or Slender Weaver Bamboo

Used mainly as a privacy screen or garden feature plant in suburban yards, Gracilis bamboo can also be used as a noise, dust or spray barrier. Gracilis bamboo has a thick mass of dark evergreen leaves that start low on the culm and continue to the top creating a dense screen with an elegant slightly arching form. Its rapid growth makes it popular as a domestic privacy screening plant, when placed along a fence line.

The fresh new shoots of Gracilis bamboo are edible. Culms can be split in long lengths, are strong and thin walled making them ideal for use in handcrafts such as basket weaving, furniture making, and musical instruments to name a few, however, most of our clients use it as a privacy screen or to green up their garden.

Recommended Plant Spacing: 1.5m

For this installation, given the desired density, quality of soil and availability of water and nutrients, these plants were placed 1m apart.
